the day leonard cohen and phil spector decided to make an album together marked the beginning of one of the most controversial partnerships in either mans career.
over the course of three weeks, the pair had written 15 new songs, a selection of which ended up on the 1977 album >death of a ladies man<. it is true that a cursory listen to the album suggest that the whole thing was simply a ragbag of crazy notions thrown into the air to see where they landed. but if you pay attention, it will quickly make sense.

masami akita and lasse marhaug have been working together since the mid 90ies. the first release on marhaugs (now deleted) label jazzassin records in 1995 was the >first rock< split single. in 2001 merzbow and jazzkammer (marhaugs project with john hegre) released a live album. later, akita and marhaug executed several live collaborations, but often with other artists such as hair stylistics and jim o rourke. in 2010 they finally got together to record as duo. recorded at gok sound studios in tokyo the results can now be heard as >mer mar<.
made using a combination of scrap metal screeching, analogue synths, and enough effect pedals to give you overweight with most airline companies, >mer mar< is a tour de force for both of these noise veterans, hinting to some classic 80s merzbow jams such as material action.

if you have been following graeme clark in his solo disguise as the revenge or the stream of 6th borough project 12-inches leading up to this one, you should know what to expect heredeep, blissfully hypnotic sampledelia with track flows governed by the laws of extreme repetition. its a shame that trance means a particular subgenre of electronic music, because that term applies just as much to the effects of these tracks as anything tiësto has ever played.
